AN OPEN INITIATIVE FOR WESTERN MACEDONIA

What is Το Ρεύμα

Programs are usually written first and presented afterwards. Here, it happens the other way around.

01 THE METHOD

Το Ρεύμα is an open initiative for Western Macedonia.

Each round opens a topic. Full documentation is published—official, openly available data, current rules, and what has been tried elsewhere.

Citizens, organisations and anyone familiar with the issue can submit proposals and debate them in public. Proposals are assessed against criteria set out in advance; each receives a reasoned reply, and the shortlisted ones return for a public vote.

At the end, the resulting proposal is published with full traceability: which idea or fact it started from, and the reasoning behind it.

That is all.
And it is harder than it sounds.

02 WHY NOW

The deepest change in the region’s modern history.

Western Macedonia is going through the deepest transformation in its modern history. Its per-capita income has shrunk more than any other Greek region, its population fell by over 10% in a decade, and unemployment remains among the highest in Greece—and at times in Europe.

At the same time, decisions that will shape the next twenty years—energy, infrastructure, major investment, housing and health—are being made now. Often without the region having stated exactly what it is asking for.

Το Ρεύμα exists to articulate that. With evidence, in public, by the people who live here.

03 WHAT IT IS NOT

It has no legal personality. It is not funded by a public or private body, is not a European or national programme, is not affiliated with local government and does not speak for any public authority.

It is not a political faction and belongs to no party. It sells nothing and collects no data for any purpose other than running the open consultation.

It is a platform and a method. For now, that is all.

04 WHAT COMES NEXT

The question is not what Το Ρεύμα will become.

The method is being tested in practice, on issues that affect everyone—not just a few. The real question is what a place will do once it has, for the first time, stated with evidence exactly what it is asking for. The answer is not up to us.
